Earthquake!! What Should I Do?

When an earthquake strikes

As a rule, pull over to the left and turn off the engine.

Listen to the radio to learn factual information on the earthquake and road traffic.

Refrain from driving until permitted to do so.

Follow police and SHUTOKO instructions.

If you leave your vehicle, always

Leave your key in the ignition.

Shut the window tightly and leave the door unlocked.

Remove all valuables.

Leave a note with your address.

If there is an accident, or a car is on fire

Call SHUTOKO from the nearest emergency phone.

Follow instructions from SHUTOKO, police and fire personnel.

When the fire first breaks out, use a fire extinguisher.

  • immediately following strong earthquakes, an emergency inspection is carried out to confirm the safety of expressway structures. This inspection takes approximately 3 hours.
  • In cases where leaving the expressway becomes a matter of emergency, calmly evacuate.
  • Emergency exits are located along expressways at 1 km intervals (400 m intervals inside tunnels). Emergency telephones are also installed at intervals of approximately 500 m (approx, 100 m in tunnels).
  • Please listen carefully to accurate information on the radio - always stay calm.
