BOX BURGER Hakone-Yumoto

From (B)Haneda Airport to Seisho By-pass(E84)
About 6 min. from(E84)Hakoneguchi

The Box Burger Hakone Yumoto branch, which opened in August, 2023, occupies a renovated traditional Japanese house built 70 years ago, and features a wonderful atmosphere. Formerly a Geisha house situated along a quiet street in the town, the renovations were led by a designer, resulting in an art space combining Burgers with a Japanese aesthetic.
Out of a desire serve as a special place where the customer can relax naturally with someone important and relax their heart, the concept of the shop is, in Japanese, Wakei Seijaku. This is a term from the Japanese tea ceremony, and toughly translated, it means to be friendly with everyone, show mutual respect, maintain a pure atmosphere, and a calm heart.

The recipe for their authentic hamburger, the shop’s main dish, was overseen by American Chef Andrew Spurgin, showing off his skill having served meals to famous individuals, such as US presidents and the Prince of Wales, for over 30 years.
Out of their desire to serve food that is not only delicious, but good for you and energizing, the shop uses only the best ingredients such as Soshu Beef, a brand of beef from Minami Ashigara in Kanagawa Prefecture, additive-free buns, and domestically produced vegetables subjected to a veggie wash.

They also offer vegan options made with buns, cheese, and sauces using no eggs or milk products, and gluten free options made with 100% rice flour buns.

Their Matcha Drink, made with the highest quality organic matcha grown in Aichi Prefecture, is only available at this Hakone Yumoto branch. In addition to the standard hot and iced versions, they also offer shakes and beer made with matcha.

About 10 min. from(E84)Hakoneguchi

Hakone Yuryo is a large scale day-trip hot spring facility based on a theme of hospitality of water and hospitality of food. Occupying a traditional style building nestled in the forest, visitors can hear the distant sound of the Hakone Tozan Train and experience a moment of healing relaxation as they seem to bathe in the verdant nature of the forest itself.
The wide-open main bath, Honden Yurakuan Oyu, features a spacious indoor bath, small ceramic baths made from Shigaraki ware that you can have to yourself, an outdoor rock bath under the open sky, and Miharashiyu or sightseeing bath that lets you observe the natural beauty of Hakone up close. The water here is a pure alkaline hot spring water that is soft on the skin. It is sourced from the Tonosawa Hot Spring, one of the seven hot springs of Hakone.

They also offer 19 reserved outdoor baths for groups and individuals who want privacy. If you relax in the hot spring while experiencing the charming scenery, it will warm both your body and mind.

If your timing is right, you can enjoy a Löyly service in the sauna. This improves your metabolism and offers a detox effect that helps you release toxins.

The Löyly service is offered weekdays every two hours starting from 11:30 AM and Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays every hour from 11:30 AM or up to 20 people.

To Enjoy Hakone to the Fullest

About 10 min. from(E84)Hakoneguchi

Hakone offers an opportunity to enjoy a variety of activities in one place. If you rent a car and drive to Hakone Yumoto, you can then use the diverse public transportation options to have fun.
Park the car near Hakone Yumoto Station and then board the Hakone Tozan Train. You will experience the odd phenomenon of the train suddenly reverses directions as you travel toward Gora. This is called the switch-back method of travel.
The elevation difference of this section of the line is about 500 meters with steep inclines. It would be impossible to climb the slope going in a straight line, so the tracks zigzag back and forth, reversing direction as necessary, to slowly climb the mountain.

In order to get from Gora to Owakudani, your trip will be smoother if you take the Hakone Tozan Cable Car to Sounzan Station at the midway point, and then get on the Hakone Ropeway. You can also check out the Streets of Gora and see a view of Mt. Hakone from Sounzan Station.

Owakudani is one of the leading sightseeing destinations in Hakone. Looking down from the Hakone Ropeway, you will see white smoke (gas from volcanic activity) rising up in many places, offering an impressive sight.
One popular item only available in Owakudani is the famous Kuro Tamago, or black egg. The reason the shell of the boiled egg is black is apparently because when the egg is boiled in the hot spring water, the constituents of that water attach to the numerous pores of the eggshell causing a chemical reaction. It is said that if you consume a black egg with a show of respect to the Enmei Jizo statue in Owakudani, or life extending Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva statue, then your lifespan will be extended by seven years.

Togendai Station, the final stop on the Hakone Ropeway, is located on the shore of Lake Ashi. Togendai Port is located close by, from which you can board a mock pirate ship to cruise across the lake from Togendai to Hakonemachi Port and Motohakone Port. Three types of pirate ships operate on the lake. If you want to visit Hakone Shrine, make sure to get off at Motohakone Port.
If you’d rather enjoy Lake Ashi at your leisure, you can travel on the route of the Sorakaze pleasure boat which will take you half way around the lake to enjoy the beautiful scenery reflecting on the lake surface.

Enjoy Shopping in Gotemba

About 5 min. from(E1)Gotemba IC

There are plenty of shopping opportunities close to the Gotemba Interchange.
Gotemba Premium Outlets, operated by Mitsubishi Estate and Simon, is one of the largest outlet malls in Japan, opened in July 2000. Offering a view of Mt. Fuji right before your eyes, the grounds include a wide variety of approximately 290 shops lining the streets, including fashion brands, daily sundries, cosmetics, outdoor goods, and gourmet dining.

The spacious grounds are divided into three areas: East Zone, West Zone, and Hill Side, with total shop floor space exceeding 60,000 square meters. Simply walking by all the shops in each zone will surely provide ample exercise.
Added in 2020, the Hill Side zone features a photo spot where you can have a commemorative picture taken with Mt. Fuji at your back, convenient for remembering your visit (the photos taken can be purchased for a fee.)

Kamaboko, made from fish paste, is a food long consumed in Japan at celebratory events. Serving as a main dish, a side dish, a salad, or snack depending on how it is arranged, it also makes a gift that is sure to please.
If you stop by the Suzuhiro Kamaboko Gotemba branch, located close to the Gotemba Interchange, you can easily enjoy the flavors offered by this venerable shop originally opened in Odawara. Suzuhiro’s kamaboko are notable for using carefully selected and naturally sourced ingredients without depending on preservatives. You can also use their eat-in corner and dine on a freshly cooked fried kamaboko while enjoying the relaxing scenery of Gotemba.

Photo is an example

One leading popular spot for gifts in Gotemba is Ebisenbei-no-Sato. Their Ebi Senbei, or shrimp crackers, are made by kneading thinly sliced shrimp into the dough, and come in a wide variety of flavors. You can taste almost all the products arrayed in the shop, so look for the flavor that’s perfect for you. Their break corner offers a spot to relax and enjoy free coffee or tea.
The interactive corner at the back on the second floor offers a chance to fry your own Ebi Senbei measuring 30 cm in diameter (only Saturdays and Sundays.) You can then flavor the freshly fried Ebi Senbei to your liking by drawing pictures on it using soy and other sauces, so you can create your own original Ebi Senbei.
