To prevent new damage and the exacerbation of existing damage, and to improve long-term durability and maintainability, the structure is repaired with special materials such as carbon fiber reinforcements and fiber reinforced concrete. We will replace it with a Metropolitan Expressway that will be safe and reliable even in 100 years.

Some special measures were taken to improve the durability at sea in the Higashi-Shinagawa and Samezu section where the road crosses over the sea.
Rebars placed inside the concrete greatly affect durability. The rebars are covered with a rust-resistant material called epoxy resin to improve the durability of the bridge.
Since the steel pillars will stand in the sea, a special coating is required for them to last a long time. Stainless steel lining (for corrosion prevention) is applied near the sea surface where the tides change.
Careful inspection is essential at sea where structures are prone to damage. We have adopted a "permanent scaffolding" called a precast box that allows you to see the bridge nearby without special equipment.
Improving durability and maintenance is important, but the Metropolitan Expressway is also a part of the urban environment. Taking landmarks into consideration is essential to keep Tokyo beautiful.
The permanent scaffolding design takes the waterside landmarks into consideration, and the entire bridge will be repainted to match the waterside landmarks.

With its long history, Nihonbashi is a famous tourist place in Tokyo which attracts many visitors from abroad. In order to make Nihonbashi beautiful, we will move the overpass to the underground, opening up a view of the sky.
